Membership
Library membership is open to any member of the sangat who is an Australian citizen or a Private Resident of Australia. Membership has to be renewed every year in the month of January and costs $10 per annum. A current driving license must be presented for membership approval. Applications forms for membership are available from the librarian.
AIMS
The Sri Guru Hargobind Library is a vital and essential part of the services provided to the Sangat by the Blackburn Gurdwara. Its main aims are to:- Facilitate
access to and borrowing of books on Sikhism both in English and Punjabi Promote dissemination of Kirtan and Katha through loans of Audio tapes, CDs, DVDs and video tapes Provide access to Reference materials and newspapers and magazines. Provide a facility for quiet reading and research Record and make available to the Sangat copies of CDs and MP3s of visiting Ragi Jathas' renditions. Support the curriculum needs of the Punjabi Language Classes.

BOOKS

The library has an impressive collection of books from various well known authors. Our book collection is divided into the following sections:-
  • An Adult section which has both Fiction and Non-Fiction books in Punjabi and English. We have about 3,000 titles in our collection.
  • A Children's section with about 400 titles both in English and Punjabi.
  • A Reference section which has an extensive list of Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias on Sikhism and other general reference books both in English and Punjabi.

NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES

The library purchases the AJIT newspaper from India and receives the following magazines:-

Sant Sipahi - Monthly
Nishaan - Quarterly
The Sikh Review - Monthly
Abstracts of Sikh Studies - Quarterly
Sewa Joti - Monthly
These are read widely by members as well as our overseas students.

AUDIO-VISUAL RESOURCES

The library houses close to 2000 non-book materials. These consist of mainly Audio tapes, CDs, Video tapes, DVDs and VCDs.

Loan Durations
Books - 28 days
Magazines(Past issues only) - 14 days
All audio visual material (CDs, Audiotapes and VCDs) - 14 days
Members can borrow up to 4 items only. Maximum of 1CD, 2Audiotapes or 1VCD can be borrowed at any one time with books.


LOST MATERIAL
If any item is lost or damaged the borrower must report the loss or damage to the librarian. If after 2 weeks the material is not found the borrower will be responsible for the replacement cost of the material including a processing charges of $5.00.

LIBRARY RULES The library is a place where the members of the Sangat may come to do research or quiet reading as well as borrow and return items. It must therefore be conducive to study and provide a quiet atmosphere. Patrons are therefore requested to keep noise level at a minimum at all times. No food or drinks are to be brought into the library. Bags and cases may be brought into the library but these should be left with the librarian on duty. Mobile phone conversations should take place outside the library.

FICTION books are shelved in alphabetical order according to the first three letters of the author's first name or surname e.g. A novel by Nanak Singh will be found under N and have the call number NAN A novel by Rajinder Singh Gill will be found under G and have the call number GIL

Note: All books in English have the letter E in front of their call number. Children's Books have the prefix J for books in Punjabi and J(E) for books in English as part of their call number.
